Scientists at Tsinghua University’s School of Basic Medical Sciences are making impactful contributions to the advancement of science with an increasingly influential, dynamic, and open mindset. With a strong focus on human health and life sciences, they are working collaboratively to find solutions to critical biomedical challenges, thereby contributing to the advancement of China’s scientific and technological innovation, societal progress, and the overall improvement of medical quality.
Within the School, a culture of scientific passion and innovation is actively fostered. Through collaboration, shared vision and mutual understanding are enhanced, creating fertile ground for creativity and discovery. The School continues to expand technological cooperation and industry engagement both domestically and internationally, aiming to boost global visibility and academic influence. By building an interdisciplinary platform unrestricted by national, regional, or institutional boundaries, the School has broadened research perspectives, fostered intellectual exchange, and inspired academic insight.
Strategic Partnership with Shanxi Medical University
The School of Medicine has signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement with Shanxi Medical University. Since then, the two institutions have taken significant steps in key areas such as discipline development, talent cultivation, and the co-construction of research platforms, achieving initial results. This partnership represents a concrete effort by Tsinghua University’s School of Medicine to implement the strategic goals of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, serve the Healthy China initiative, and strengthen medical education. It also marks a new direction in exploring synergistic models for talent development and scientific research.
Both parties aim to foster outstanding medical researchers who are not only deeply rooted in local contexts and attuned to community needs but also capable of contributing at the highest levels of scientific inquiry. Bilateral talks and joint cooperation activities were held on March 15, May 7–8, and September 15, 2023, to further advance this collaboration.
Strategic Agreement Signed
On the afternoon of March 15, 2022, a delegation of 13 representatives from Shanxi Medical University, led by Party Secretary Wang Jun and President Xie Jun, visited Tsinghua University School of Medicine. Discussions focused on areas such as discipline development, talent training, faculty development, and the establishment of teaching practice bases. Tsinghua University Vice President Wang Hongwei, Dean Qi Hai of the School of Medicine, Associate Deans Li Haitao and Liao Hong’en, and faculty representatives participated in the meetings.
Vice President Wang Hongwei welcomed the visitors at Gongziting and shared Tsinghua’s vision for the development of New Medicine. He emphasized the national momentum in training academic medical professionals and fostering medical innovation. Leveraging this opportunity, Tsinghua University has optimized its medical education strategy. Its newly established "Physician-Scientist Excellence Program" enrolled its first cohort of students in September of the previous year. The program integrates Tsinghua’s strengths in life sciences, basic medicine, clinical medicine, engineering, and the humanities, combining university-level research and teaching platforms to cultivate top-tier physician-scientists with a strong sense of humanistic care.
Following this, Dean Qi Hai chaired a roundtable discussion in which the delegation from Shanxi Medical University and Tsinghua faculty engaged in in-depth dialogue about the collaboration. Associate Dean Li Haitao gave an overview of the School’s history, talent development, faculty structure, discipline planning, research and teaching platforms, scientific achievements, and international partnerships. The two sides also exchanged views on the challenges and opportunities facing medical school development.

Tsinghua University School of Medicine Delegation Visits Shanxi Medical University to Deepen Strategic Cooperation
From May 7 to May 8, 2023, a delegation from Tsinghua University—led by Vice President Wang Hongwei, Dean Qi Hai of the School of Medicine, and Associate Dean Li Haitao—visited Shanxi Medical University to further advance their strategic partnership.
Accompanied by Shanxi Medical University President Xie Jun and faculty members, the Tsinghua delegation toured the Medical Science and Technology Building and the Laboratory Animal Center at the Zhongdu Campus. They also visited the university’s Development Achievement Exhibition. At the Yingze Campus, the delegation visited key research platforms including the Ministry-Province Joint Collaborative Innovation Center for Precision Molecular Imaging and Diagnosis, and the Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Research Center.
In addition, the delegation held discussions with clinical researchers at several key departments of the First Affiliated Hospital of Shanxi Medical University. Faculty members from Tsinghua University also engaged in in-depth exchanges with young teachers and students from Shanxi Medical University on research topics of mutual interest, fostering academic dialogue and collaboration.


During the visit, the School of Medicine of Tsinghua University and Shanxi Medical University held the signing ceremony of the "Implementation Guidelines for the Strategic Cooperation Framework Agreement between Tsinghua University School of Medicine and Shanxi Medical University" at the Academic Lecture Hall of the Teaching and Office Building at the Zhongdu Campus of Shanxi Medical University. Before the signing ceremony, both parties jointly planted a "Friendship Tree" in the garden beside the teaching and office building at the Zhongdu Campus, symbolizing smooth progress in their endeavors and everlasting friendship.


Tsinghua University School of Medicine and Shanxi Medical University Deepen Cooperation, Advancing New Measures for Talent Cultivation
In terms of scientific research collaboration and graduate education, Shanxi Medical University selected outstanding doctoral students and young faculty members in the fall semester of 2023 to join various laboratories at Tsinghua University School of Medicine for research training and project studies. On September 6, 2023, Professor Jiao Xiangying, vice president of Shanxi Medical University, along with 14 doctoral students and young faculty members, visited Tsinghua University School of Medicine. At the welcome meeting, Professor Qi Hai, Dean of Tsinghua University School of Medicine, expressed the hope that both parties would generate impactful academic results through this innovative cooperation model, and that the students would achieve academic success and contribute significantly to the development of medical and health careers in Shanxi and China. Professor Li Haitao, Vice Dean of Tsinghua University School of Medicine, provided a detailed introduction to the research projects established through the cooperation, including those in epigenetics and stem cells, immunology, and infectious disease studies.


The "Cooperation and Development" Academic Seminar between Beijing Ditan Hospital and Tsinghua University Institute of Immunology Held in Beijing
On January 6, 2022, to facilitate academic exchange, strengthen collaborative research, and promote technological innovation, the Capital Medical University-affiliated Beijing Ditan Hospital (hereinafter referred to as "Ditan Hospital") and the Tsinghua University Institute of Immunology held the "Cooperation and Development" academic exchange seminar in Beijing.
Dr. Hu Xiaoyu, Executive Director of the Tsinghua University Institute of Immunology, provided an in-depth introduction to the institute. Experts and scholars from the Tsinghua Institute of Immunology, including Dong Zhongjun, Guo Xiaohuan, Hu Xiaoyu, Liu Wanli, Wu Li, and Zeng Wenwen, each shared reports on their respective research work. In line with the "win-win" principle, both parties will deepen cooperation and exchange in the fields of immunology and infectious disease research. They aim to fully leverage Ditan Hospital's clinical diagnosis, treatment, and research capabilities in emerging infectious diseases and HIV/AIDS, combined with Tsinghua University's strong research strength and talent advantages, to jointly conduct medical research and related drug development.



Tsinghua University Institute of Immunology Collaborates with Suozhi Biotech to Explore and Promote New Drug Development in Autoimmunity
Tsinghua University Institute of Immunology has recently reached a collaboration agreement with Suozhi Biotech. The two parties will conduct research and discussions in areas such as target selection and validation, disease mechanisms, and more, to support Suozhi Biotech in developing a globally competitive innovative drug pipeline. On July 19, 2022, they held their first strategic pipeline seminar in Beijing. The meeting was attended by Dr. Hu Xiaoyu, Dr. Liu Zhihua, and Dr. Zeng Wenwen from the Tsinghua University Institute of Immunology, along with team members from Suozhi Biotech. The experts at the meeting focused on several ongoing research and development pipeline projects that the company has already launched. The discussions covered topics such as the translation of basic research findings, the scientific support basis, the latest global R&D landscape, and recommendations for the next stage of pipeline development.

The School of Medical Tsinghua University Delegation Visits Indonesia for Vaccine Cooperation
To further implement the important consensus reached between the leaders of China and Indonesia on vaccine and public health cooperation during the 17th G20 summit in November 2022, Tsinghua University Vice President Wang Hongwei, Professor Zhang Linqi, Dr. Wang Yating, and a delegation from Chinese vaccine companies visited Bali and Jakarta, Indonesia. They conducted on-site inspections and exchanges with the Indonesian Ministry of Health, relevant universities, enterprises, and hospitals. The delegation reached an agreement on the establishment and implementation of the "Sino-Indonesia Vaccine and Genomics Joint Research and Development Center" (hereinafter referred to as the "Joint R\&D Center").
The delegation attended the Sino-Indonesia Vaccine Development Cooperation Signing Ceremony and the 1st Forum on Mucosal Immunization Protection against COVID-19 and Tuberculosis, co-hosted by CanSino Biologics and Indonesia's Etana Vaccine Company. In Bali, the delegation participated in the opening ceremony of the Tsinghua Southeast Asia Center. In Jakarta, the delegation visited the Jakarta Infectious Disease Hospital, vaccine research and development companies, and research institutions, where they had in-depth discussions on the cooperation fields and mechanisms of the "Joint R&D Center." Finally, Tsinghua University and the Indonesian Ministry of Health held a comprehensive discussion on the "Sino-Indonesia Vaccine and Genomics Joint Research and Development Center" in Jakarta.




The 7th FAIR Conference Organized by Tsinghua University Institute of Immunology and Shanghai Immunology Institute Successfully Held
From April 7 to 8, 2023, the 7th "Forum on Advancements in Immunology Research" (FAIR Conference) was successfully held in Beijing. The conference was jointly hosted by the Tsinghua University Institute of Immunology and the Shanghai Immunology Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. Nearly 420 faculty members and students from Tsinghua University Institute of Immunology, Shanghai Immunology Institute, and Shanghai Immunotherapy Innovation Research Institute attended the event. The forum aimed to foster communication and learning, further eliminate research barriers, broaden scientific perspectives, and promote the healthy development of academic culture.

Visit by staff from the School of Basic Medicine, Shenzhen University Medical School
On the afternoon of April 13, 2023, a delegation of seven members, led by Professor Ying ying, the Vice Dean of the School of Basic Medical Sciences at Shenzhen University, visited our department. The delegation included Professor Li Haitao, Vice Dean of the School of Medicine; Dr. Du Yanan, Associate Dean of the Department of Biomedical Engineering; and Wu Ning, Director of the Medical Education Office at Tsinghua University, among others. After the meeting, the delegation visited various platforms and centers, including the Biomedical Engineering Experimental Teaching Platform, Medical Experimental Teaching Center, Anatomy Teaching Center, Biomedical Imaging Research Center, Protein Research Technology Center, and the Experimental Animal Center. The leaders of these platforms and centers, including Ding Hui, Li Xue, Zhang Xiaodong, Huang Hui, Zhao Xihai, Fan Shilong, and Chang Zai, warmly gave detailed introductions to the visiting team.



Visit of Delegation from Nanhua University Hengyang Medical College
On the morning of April 19, 2023, a delegation of five people, led by Professor Wang Fuqi, Vice President of Nanhua University and Dean of Hengyang Medical College, visited our institution. The delegation was received by Professor Qi Hai, Dean of the School of Medicine; Professor Li Haitao, Vice Dean; Professor Du Yanan, Associate Dean of the Department of Biomedical Engineering; Wu Ning, Director of the Medical Education Office; and Wang Daliang, Head of the Party Committee's Student Affairs Group. After the meeting, Professor Wang Fuqi and the delegation visited various centers, including the Biochip Center, Biomedical Engineering Experimental Teaching Platform, China’s First COVID-19 Drug Research Laboratory, Medical Experimental Teaching Center, Biomedical Imaging Research Center, Protein Research Technology Center, and the Experimental Animal Center. Professors Zhang Linqi, Xu Youchun, Liang Zuoqing, Shi Xuanling, Liu Xiaoling, Bao Jie, Fan Shilong, and Chang Zai warmly gave detailed introductions to the visiting team.



Visit of Research Delegation from South China University of Technology
On the afternoon of May 6, 2023, a research delegation from South China University of Technology, including Professors Wu Zuqiang and Wang Qiang, visited our institution. The delegation was received by Professor Li Haitao, Vice Dean of the School of Medicine; Professor Cheng Gong, Vice Dean; Guo Jianli, Party Secretary of the School Hospital; Li Hongxing, Vice Dean of the School Hospital; Wu Ning, Director of the Medical Education Office; and Miao Wei, Director of the Office of the Department of Basic Medical Sciences. After the meeting, Professors Wu Zuqiang, Wang Qiang, and the rest of the delegation visited China’s first COVID-19 drug research laboratory and the School Hospital. Professors Shi Xuanling and Guo Jianli warmly provided detailed introductions to the visiting team.


BioMap Teams Up with Institute for Immunology Tsinghua University to Accelerate Tumor Macrophage Target Discovery
On May 24, 2023, BioMap and Professor Hu Xiaoyu’s team from the Institute for Immunology at Tsinghua University announced a collaboration to conduct a series of studies, including the “discovery of tumor-associated macrophage regulatory proteins and therapeutic targets,” based on the AIGP platform. Professor Hu’s team is also among the first partners to join the public beta program of the AIGP platform since its launch. This collaboration will fully leverage BioMap’s powerful life science AI model engine and the AIGP platform’s capability to tackle complex problems in life science research, along with Professor Hu’s team’s expertise in macrophage functional regulation, to jointly advance progress and development in tumor immunotherapy.

Visit by Dr. Lan Kangping from the Singapore Immunology Institute
On the morning of August 15, 2023, Dr. Lan Kangping, Director of the Singapore Immunology Institute, visited our department. He was received and engaged in discussions with Professor Fu Yangxin and Associate Professors Zheng Hanqiu, Guo Xiaohuan, Dai Chao, Lan Xun, Peng Min, Tang Haidong, Xu Meng, and Miao Wei. Following the meeting, Dr. Lan visited the Tsinghua University Institute for Immunology, the Animal Experiment Center, and the Protein Research Technology Center.
