Domestic and International Academic Exchange

From 2021 to 2023, having undergone the multiple tests and challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the School of Basic Medical Sciences has continued to follow the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, fully implementing the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. The school has sought development amid transformation and pursued breakthroughs amid competition, actively aligning with Tsinghua’s strategy for innovative medical development, continuously optimizing its internal research and innovation ecosystem, and adhering to an approach of connotative development.

Guided by the principles of “focusing on the forefront of world science and technology, serving the main economic battlefield, addressing major national needs, and safeguarding people’s health,” the school has made sustained efforts to deepen the integration of scientific research and academic activities. It has carried out a rich variety of research events, promoted interactions and collaborations with peers at home and abroad (including Hong Kong and Macao), expanded international scientific and industrial exchanges, and continuously enhanced its academic influence, core competitiveness, internationalization capacity, and global impact in multiple fields such as immunology, infectious diseases, stem cells, molecular oncology, and neuroscience. These efforts have contributed to supporting national strategic needs and strengthening key industry sectors in vital areas.

14th Tsinghua University Doctoral Academic Forum on Life Sciences, Medicine, and Pharmacy Successfully Opens

On October 16, 2021, the 14th Tsinghua University “Life Sciences, Medicine, and Pharmacy” Doctoral Academic Forum officially opened. Teachers, doctoral students, and undergraduate students from relevant disciplines, including the School of Life Sciences, School of Medicine, School of Pharmacy, and Department of Automation, participated both online and offline, jointly discussing research achievements and future development in related fields.

“Master Face to Face” is a special interview program jointly initiated and produced by faculty and students of the Tsinghua University Institute for Immunology. The series focuses on cutting-edge scientific topics in immunology that draw particular attention in specific historical and social contexts. Through in-depth conversations with distinguished immunologists worldwide, it highlights their research characteristics, unique insights, and perspectives that span both the depth and breadth of history—illuminating flashes of wisdom from pivotal scientific moments. Audiences are invited to listen closely to the scholars’ stories, experiences, and reflections—whether they are epic, persistent, or quietly profound. This series aims to inspire fellow researchers and students on their journey, fostering reflection on the relationship between individuals and society, science and technology, and encouraging the pursuit of shared dreams.

Exclusive Interview Series with Immunologists (Part I) - Jacques F.A.P. Miller

On May 5, 2022, Professor Wu Li of the Tsinghua University Institute for Immunology conducted an in-depth interview with renowned immunologist Jacques F.A.P. Miller, exploring his lifelong journey “in company with immunology.” Professor Wu and Professor Miller worked together at WEHI for over 20 years, and Professor Miller was one of the nominators for Professor Wu’s Burnet Prize. Miller’s passion and dedication to immunology research have deeply influenced Professor Wu.

In their conversation, Professor Miller recounted his groundbreaking discovery of the immune function of the thymus 60 years ago. Even at the age of 91, Professor Miller continues to advance along the path of immunology research, maintaining his acute professional sensitivity and unyielding curiosity for the frontiers of scientific development.

Tsinghua University Institute for Immunology – Exclusive Interview Series with Immunologists (Part II)—Max D. Cooper

On September 29, 2022, Academician Dong Chen of the Tsinghua University Institute for Immunology held an online interview with Professor Max D. Cooper, one of the founding fathers of modern immunology.

Born in August 1933 in Mississippi, USA, Professor Cooper graduated from Tulane University School of Medicine. He is a Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar, a professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, and a member of the Emory University School of Medicine Vaccine Center.

Professor Cooper has served as president of the American Association of Immunologists, the Clinical Immunology Society, and the Kunkel Society. He has been elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the French Academy of Sciences (as a foreign member), and the Royal Society of London (as a foreign member).

Xiamen Chang Gung Hospital – Tsinghua University School of Medicine Immunology & Allergy Summit Forum Successfully Held

On May 21–22, 2022, the “Xiamen Chang Gung Hospital – Tsinghua University School of Medicine Immunology & Allergy Summit Forum,” co-hosted by Xiamen Chang Gung Hospital and the Tsinghua University School of Medicine, was successfully held through the joint efforts of both parties. The forum brought together renowned experts in allergic and immunological diseases from institutions including Xiamen Chang Gung Hospital, Tsinghua University School of Medicine, Harvard Medical School (USA), Chiba University (Japan), Peking Union Medical College Hospital, and Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital. Participants delivered and discussed thematic lectures on allergy-related research topics via online sessions.

The event opened with welcome speeches by Dr. Cai Yinghuang, President of Xiamen Chang Gung Hospital; Professor Qi Hai, Dean of the Tsinghua University School of Medicine; and Professor Gao Jintuan, Chair of the Allergy Subcommittee of the Fujian Medical Association, officially marking the start of the summit forum.

Focusing on immunology and allergy-related diseases, the forum featured presentations by leading scientists from China and abroad. Academician Dong Chen, one of the world’s top immunologists, shared his team’s over 20 years of research on IL-25, introducing the pathogenic mechanisms of T cells in allergic diseases, from fundamental theory to ongoing clinical trials. Dean Qi Hai presented his team’s latest breakthroughs in antibody formation and immune homeostasis research, emphasizing that identifying problems from clinical practice and addressing them through scientific methods is key to preventing and treating allergic diseases.

In addition, several project leaders—including Professors Xu Huji, Liu Yuncai, Hu Xiaoyu, Associate Professor Zeng Wenwen, and Associate Professor Guo Xiaohuan—also presented their latest research progress.

Tsinghua–Sun Yat-sen Medical Immunology Forum & CSCO BC Immunotherapy Forum Successfully Held

On August 19, 2022, the “Tsinghua–Sun Yat-sen Medical Immunology Forum & CSCO BC Immunotherapy Forum,” jointly organized by the Tsinghua University Institute for Immunology, the Department of Immunology and Microbiology of Sun Yat-sen University Zhongshan School of Medicine, and the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, was successfully conducted through online sessions, keynote lectures, and discussions.

Centered on the theme of immunology, the forum invited distinguished immunologists and oncologists from China and abroad to deliver academic presentations. By sharing scientific achievements, the event aimed to provide a broad platform for exchange and discussion, foster innovative thinking and deep collaboration, advance the development of immunotherapy, promote the integration of basic immunology research with translational applications, and further contribute to the continuous progress of immunology in China.

In the morning session, immunologists including Shi Yan, Liu Zhihua, Zeng Wenwen, Xu Meng, Zhu Keke, Tian Guobao, Cai Junchao, Chen Jinjing, and Yang Linbin from the Tsinghua University Institute for Immunology, the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory for Tropical Disease Control and Research, and Sun Yat-sen University shared their research outcomes and engaged in in-depth discussions with participants. Professor Guo Xiaohuan served as the moderator, seamlessly connecting the different segments of the forum.

In the afternoon, a student presentation competition featured nine PhD candidates showcasing their research topics, followed by insightful commentary from Professor Lin Xin of the Institute for Immunology.

In the evening session, Professor Hu Xiaoyu from Tsinghua University Institute for Immunology delivered the opening remarks, with Professor Dong Zhongjun as moderator. Five international experts presented their research findings, actively exchanged knowledge with attendees, and engaged in discussions, fostering an atmosphere of collaborative exploration.

2022 National Symposium on Vector-Borne Pathogen Transmission and Control

On August 24–25, 2022, the “2022 National Symposium on Vector-Borne Pathogen Transmission and Control,” hosted by the Institute of Infectious Diseases of Shenzhen Bay Laboratory and co-organized by the Vector Insects and Pathogen Interaction Committee of the Entomological Society of China and Tsinghua University School of Medicine, was successfully held at the Academic Lecture Hall on the third floor of Shenzhen Bay Laboratory.

The conference adopted a hybrid format, combining on-site participation with online live streaming, and invited leading experts and scholars in the field of vector-borne infectious diseases to deliver keynote reports. Participants exchanged and discussed the development and advancement of biosafety measures for the prevention and control of vector-borne infectious diseases, contributing to more effective prevention and intervention strategies for major vector-transmitted diseases.

The opening ceremony featured speeches by Academician Kang Le of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Vice Director Zhong Hai of the Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Commission, and Academician Wu Yundong, Executive Deputy Director of Shenzhen Bay Laboratory. Professor Cheng Gong, Chair of the Vector Insects and Pathogen Interaction Committee, introduced the organization of the meeting.

At the conclusion of the symposium, Professor Cheng Gong delivered the committee’s annual work summary and, together with committee representatives, discussed future work plans and prospects. The live-streamed sessions attracted 7,782 online views on the first day and a total of 12,375 views over the two days.

10th Global Health and Infectious Diseases Academic Forum Successfully Held

From October 28 to 30, 2022, the 10th Global Health and Infectious Diseases Academic Forum was successfully held in Beijing. Organized by the Center for Infectious Diseases of Tsinghua University School of Medicine, the forum invited renowned scholars in the field of infectious diseases to deliver keynote presentations on the latest developments and to engage in discussions on key topics and future directions in infectious disease research.

Attendees from the Department of Basic Medical Sciences included Zhang Linqi, Zhang Jingren, Xiang Ye, Ding Qiang, Liu Jiafeng, Liu Jintao, Wang Yating, Zhu Yibin, Shi Xuanling, and An Haoran; from the School of Life Sciences, Wang Xinquan and Qi Tiancong; and from the School of Pharmacy, Zhang Yonghui and Zhang Shuyi. In addition, Researcher Chen Yihua from the Institute of Microbiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Cao Bin (Vice President of China-Japan Friendship Hospital), and Research Intern Li Haibo also attended the forum.

The conference achieved fruitful results. Through in-depth discussions on the key issues and future development directions of infectious disease research, the forum further promoted academic exchange and collaboration in the field, accelerated the translation of basic research findings into practical applications, and contributed to providing technological support for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of major infectious diseases in China.

Tsinghua–RIKEN Joint Workshop in Immunology

Co-hosted by the Institute for Immunology at Tsinghua University (IITU) and Japan’s RIKEN, the Tsinghua–RIKEN Joint Workshop on Recent Progress in Immunology was held online on November 25, 2022.

5th National Symposium for Young Virologists Successfully Held — School of Medicine Co-organizes to Explore the Latest Advances in Virology

On November 26–27, 2022, the “5th National Symposium for Young Virologists,” hosted by the Institute of Infectious Diseases of Shenzhen Bay Laboratory and co-organized by the Virology Committee of the Chinese Society for Microbiology, the Virology Policy Advisory Expert Team of the Chinese Society for Microbiology, and the Tsinghua University School of Medicine, was successfully held online. The conference invited both senior and early-career experts in virology to deliver keynote presentations, exchange ideas, and discuss cutting-edge scientific issues in the field, with the aim of advancing virology research and development in China.

The symposium focused on four key themes: viral genetic variation and molecular epidemiology; molecular mechanisms of virus–host interactions; mechanisms of viral infection, immunity, and pathogenesis; and the development of viral diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines. In addition, the conference presented the Outstanding Academic Poster Awards. After evaluation by a panel of seven expert judges, eight outstanding young scholars were recognized—one first prize, two second prizes, and five third prizes.

In his closing remarks, Professor Cheng Gong of Tsinghua University School of Medicine highlighted the rich and high-quality content of the reports, which fully reflected the latest progress and achievements in virology in recent years. He expressed his hopes for continued vibrant growth and breakthroughs in the field of virology.

The School of Basic Medical Sciences organized and launched the Frontier of Biomedical Seminar Tsinghua University Series on June 8, 2023. The series invites renowned experts and scholars from China and abroad in the field of biomedical sciences to visit, exchange ideas, and give presentations. Its goal is to substantially broaden the school’s collaboration and communication with domestic and international peers, promote knowledge sharing, foster multidisciplinary integration, and guide students to understand the frontier knowledge of their own and related disciplines.

Through these lectures, students are encouraged to grasp the latest research developments, enhance their academic sensitivity, and contribute to advancing the discipline of basic medical sciences. The series also aims to improve students’ academic research capabilities and the quality of talent cultivation. The lecture topics primarily cover frontier scientific research progress and technological achievements in medicine and its closely related disciplines that share common ground with the department’s research focus.

First Session of Frontier of Biomedical Seminar Tsinghua University Series Successfully Held

On June 8, 2023, the inaugural session of the Frontiers in Biomedical Sciences (FBM) lecture series was held in Room B323 of the Medical Science Building. The event featured distinguished speakers including Professor Dong Jintang, Chair Professor and Head of the Department of Human Cell Biology and Genetics at the School of Medicine, Southern University of Science and Technology; Professor Wang Haopeng from the School of Life Science and Technology, ShanghaiTech University; and Dr. Li Zhaodong, Senior Editor of Cancer Cell.

The lecture attracted wide attention from faculty and students both within and outside the school, with the venue fully occupied half an hour before the session began. The first lecture was jointly hosted by Professors Lin Xin, Li Haitao, and Shen Xiaohua from the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, School of Medicine.

Second Session of Frontier of Biomedical Seminar Tsinghua University Series Successfully Held

On June 15, 2023, the second session of the Frontiers in Biomedical Sciences lecture series, organized by the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, was successfully held in Room B323 of the Medical Science Building.

This session featured Professor Wang Jichang from the School of Medicine, Sun Yat-sen University, who delivered a talk entitled “Dynamic Control of Endogenous Retroviruses during Early Human Development”, and Professor Liu Jintao from the School of Medicine, who presented on “Spatial Metabolic Interactions in Bacterial Communities.”

Following the presentations, both speakers engaged in in-depth discussions and exchanges with faculty members and students. The session was co-hosted by Professors Shen Xiaohua and Wang Yating from the School of Basic Medical Sciences.

Third Session of Frontier of Biomedical Seminar Tsinghua University Series Successfully Held

On June 29, 2023, the third session of the Frontiers in Biomedical Sciences lecture series, organized by the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, was successfully held in Room B323 of the Medical Science Building.

This session featured Professor Sun Beicheng from the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University, who presented on “Target Discovery Based on the Immune Microenvironment of Liver Cancer”, and Professor Chen Chong from West China Hospital, Sichuan University, who delivered a talk entitled “Precision Cancer Models for Investigating Tumorigenesis, Progression, and Treatment.”

Following the presentations, the two speakers engaged in extensive discussions and exchanges with faculty and students. The session was organized and hosted by Professors Li Haitao and Charles David from the School of Basic Medical Sciences. After the lecture, Professors Li Haitao and Dai Chao expressed sincere thanks to Professors Sun and Chen, and presented them with commemorative gifts from the Frontiers in Biomedical Sciences lecture series.

Fourth Session of Frontier of Biomedical Seminar Tsinghua University Series Successfully Held

On July 27, 2023, the fourth session of the Frontiers in Biomedical Sciences lecture series, organized by the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, was successfully held in Room B323 of the Medical Science Building.

This session featured Professor Ye Jiangbin from Stanford University, who delivered a presentation entitled “Deciphering the Warburg Effect: Metabolic Reprogramming, Epigenetic Dysregulation, and Cell Dedifferentiation.”

Following the lecture, Professor Ye engaged in in-depth discussions and exchanges with faculty members and students. The session was organized and hosted by Professor Zhu Jiajun from the Department of Basic Medical Sciences.

Seventh Session of Frontier of Biomedical Seminar Tsinghua University Series Successfully Held

On August 22, 2023, the seventh session of the Frontiers in Biomedical Sciences lecture series, organized by the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, was successfully held in Room E109 of the Biomedical Building.

This session featured Professor Shi Xiaobing and Professor Wen Hong from the Department of Epigenetics at the Van Andel Institute, who delivered talks entitled “Histone Acetylation: Reading, Writing, and Beyond” and “Histone Acetylation Reader ENL in Human Cancer”, respectively.

Following the presentations, both speakers engaged in thorough discussions and exchanges with faculty members and students. The session was organized and hosted by Professor Li Haitao from the Department of Basic Medical Sciences.


Eighth Session of Frontier of Biomedical Seminar Tsinghua University Series Successfully Held

On August 24, 2023, the eighth session of the Frontiers in Biomedical Sciences lecture series, organized by the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, was successfully held in Room B323 of the Medical Science Building.

This session featured Professor Zhang Zhiguo from Columbia University Irving Medical Center, who delivered a presentation titled “An Update on Mechanisms of Epigenetic Inheritance and Onco-Histone Mutations.”

Ninth Session of Frontier of Biomedical Seminar Tsinghua University Series Successfully Held

This session featured Professor Fu Yangxin from the School of Medicine, who delivered a presentation titled “New Strategies of Antibody-Based Fusion Proteins for Tumor Immunity.”

Academic Exchange | Dr. Jinjuan Yao, External Expert in Oncology, Visits Tsinghua University

On November 6, 2023, Dr. Jinjuan Yao from the Department of Pharmacology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, USA, visited Tsinghua University and delivered a lecture in Room E109 of the Biomedical Building. The lecture, titled "Comprehensive Genomic Profiling for Precision Medicine and Immune Therapy in Solid Tumors", was followed by extensive discussion and exchange between Dr. Yao and the faculty members and students in attendance. This visit was invited and chaired by Professor Li Haitao from the School of Medicine.

The 16th Tsinghua University Frontier of Biomedical Seminar Successfully Held

On November 6, 2023, the 16th session of the Tsinghua University Frontier of Biomedical Seminar, organized by the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, was successfully held in Room B323 of the Medical Science Building. This session featured a lecture by Dr. Tieshi Li from the R&D Department of Legend Biotech in New Jersey, USA, titled "From Bench to Bedside: The Past and the Present of CAR T Cell Therapy". Following the presentation, Dr. Li engaged in extensive discussion and exchange with faculty members and students in attendance. The seminar was invited and chaired by Professor Chang Zhijie from the Department of Basic Medical Sciences.

The 17th Tsinghua University Frontier of Biomedical Seminar Successfully Held

On November 16, 2023, the 17th session of the Tsinghua University Frontier of Biomedical Seminar, organized by the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, was successfully held in Room B323 of the Medical Science Building. This session featured a lecture by Associate Professor Lan Xun from the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, titled "Accurate Off-target Detection in Ex-vivo and In-vivo CRISPR/Cas9 Editing with Low Cell Input". The 2023 Tsinghua University – The University of Hong Kong Advanced Workshop on Basic and Clinical Research in Infection and Immunity Successfully Held

From November 20 to 28, 2023, the Tsinghua University – The University of Hong Kong Advanced Workshop on Basic and Clinical Research in Infection and Immunity, organized by the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, School of Medicine, Tsinghua University, was successfully held at Tsinghua University. Faculty members and students from the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong, and the School of Medicine, Tsinghua University, jointly participated in the event. Professor Fuhe Chen was invited to deliver a keynote lecture at the opening ceremony, titled "COVID-19: What Have We Learned From Animal Models", and engaged in lively discussions with the attending guests, faculty, and students.

The 2023 Tsinghua University – University of Macau Advanced Workshop on Traditional Chinese Medicine and Immunology Research Successfully Held

From December 17 to 24, 2023, the Tsinghua University – University of Macau Advanced Workshop on Traditional Chinese Medicine and Immunology Research, organized by the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, School of Medicine, Tsinghua University, was successfully held at Tsinghua University. Faculty members and students from the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences, University of Macau, and the School of Medicine, Tsinghua University, jointly participated in the event.

At the opening ceremony, Professor Shi Yan and Professor Hu Xiaoyu, on behalf of the faculty and students of Tsinghua University, extended a warm welcome to the visiting faculty and students from the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences, University of Macau. Subsequently, Professor Chen Xin, Dean of the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences, expressed his gratitude for the organization of the workshop and conveyed his wishes for deeper exchanges and cooperation between the two institutions in the future.

Professor Shi Yan and Professor Hu Xiaoyu, on behalf of the School of Medicine, Tsinghua University, delivered the welcome address.

Subsequently, faculty members from both sides introduced the faculty composition, teaching standards, research platforms, and research directions of their respective institutions, and held the Seminar on Traditional Chinese Medicine, Natural Products, and Immunology, laying a solid foundation for further collaboration between the two universities in the fields of traditional Chinese medicine and immunology.
