Research Areas:
My research is focused on dementia and care policy, with particular attention toward implications for preventive approaches to cognitive impairment. This research has centered on three primary themes: (1) dementia ecosystem; (2) psychological well-being of older adults and caregivers; and (3) prevention, early intervention, and care management for cognitive impairment. To investigate these research questions, I draw upon interdisciplinary approaches from public policy and geriatric psychiatry, utilizing mixed methods to unpack underlying psychosocial mechanisms. I am drawn to this area out of recognition of the significant limitations of current approaches that only involve individuals rather than families, combined with the enormous and largely untapped potential of preventive approaches. I believe that we can greatly advance support for people with cognitive impairment and their family members, as well as alleviate population-level cognitive health disparities by recognizing the role of structural causes and responding with culturally appropriate prevention and intervention approaches.
I continue expanding my current project on digital health technologies and scalable approaches to improve cognitive health. The combination of psychosocial, geospatial, and biosensor data can greatly enhance the development of cognitive assessment and training interventions, which harness the power of mobile app technology to intervene multi-dimensionally. Mobile interventions are potentially affordable solutions to reach individuals hard to motivate. I develop and pilot to evaluate these clinical interventions. Moreover, I launched several projects to examine health policies that disseminate, promote, and codify these effective digital practices and models aiming at improving dementia care. Given the infancy of research focusing on digital health technologies in dementia care in China, it is vital to carry out cost-benefit analysis and meta-analysis to find out the effectiveness. More effort is needed to promote standards and practice by central and local governments to extend the reach of technology to more people in need.
