In the context of China's comprehensive promotion of healthcare reform, research on hospital management systems, operational mechanisms, and management models urgently requires further strengthening and innovation. With the advancement of modern hospital management systems, the demand for professional management talent and the need for the professional management of hospital directors have become increasingly urgent. Therefore, in May 2012, Tsinghua University established the first interdisciplinary institution in China focused on hospital management research and the cultivation of modern hospital management talent—the Institute for Hospital Management of Tsinghua University. This initiative brought together high-quality educational resources from both domestic and international institutions in the field of hospital management, leveraging the expertise of departments such as the Graduate School at Tsinghua University Shenzhen, Economic Management, Public Administration, Law, Medicine, Public Health, Sociology, Information Science, and other major academic disciplines.

The mission of the Institute for Hospital Management is to lead research with practical applications and to use research to support teaching, hospitals, society, and government. It integrates the practical needs of China's hospital management with internationally advanced concepts and methods of hospital management, developing and innovating a talent training model that fits China’s national conditions, along with a series of research outcomes that can improve the level of hospital management in China.

Building upon its existing academic structure, the Institute for Hospital Management has focused on recruiting a group of internationally recognized, high-level academic leaders, working to create a platform for international, interdisciplinary integration and innovation. The faculty team at the Institute is strong, with more than half of the faculty members coming from developed countries and regions, bringing rich teaching, research, and management experience. The team's knowledge structure covers all aspects of healthcare management, from macro-level health policies to micro-level hospital management.

The Institute for Hospital Management of Tsinghua University will continue to adhere to its vision of cultivating high-end hospital management talent with international vision, professional competence, and practical ability. Building on its existing academic structure, the Institute will explore new research fields. With excellence as its goal, the Institute will create an innovative, research-driven, practical-oriented, domestically pioneering, and world-class international hospital management research institute, contributing to Tsinghua University’s goal of becoming a world-class university.
